Hit Claude's usage limit? Carry the chat to ChatGPT or Gemini and keep working

You're in the middle of something, often code, and Claude tells you you've reached your usage limit. You can wait, upgrade, or keep going somewhere else. This guide explains each option and how to switch without retyping the whole conversation.

Usage limit or length limit?

Claude has two different limits, and the fix depends on which one you hit. Claude's help center describes both:

• Usage limit: how much you can use Claude in a period of time. When you reach it, you wait for it to reset (Claude shows when) or upgrade your plan.
• Length limit: how long a single conversation can get. Starting a fresh chat fixes it. See our guide to "conversation too long".

Your three options

1. Wait for the reset. Best if you aren't in a hurry. Your chat will still be there.
2. Upgrade your plan. Best if you hit the limit often.
3. Continue in another AI now. Best when you're mid-task and can't wait. Move the conversation to ChatGPT or Gemini, then come back to Claude after the reset if you like.

Moving works best when you carry the context, not just the last question. Otherwise the other AI starts from zero and you spend your time re-explaining.

How to switch with mcosec.ai

Hitting the limit doesn't stop you from reading the page, so this works even when Claude won't reply.

1. Stay on the Claude chat and click the mcosec.ai icon. Press Read this chat.
2. Choose Standard (or Detailed for long technical work). Code blocks, error messages and your first message are kept, and older answers are condensed.
3. Pick ChatGPT or Gemini and press Copy and continue. The new AI opens with the conversation in its message box. Review it, press Send, and keep working.

The compacted text starts with a short note telling the new AI that it's a handoff and asking it to confirm the task first. That stops it from replying to every old message.

Switching without an extension

Because Claude won't reply after the limit, you can't ask it for a summary. Instead:

1. Scroll through the chat and copy the important parts: your original request, the latest code, and the last few messages.
2. In ChatGPT or Gemini, paste them with: "I'm continuing a conversation from another assistant. Here are the key parts. Summarise the task and current state, then continue with: [your next step]."
3. Upload any files again.

Tip for next time: when you're close to the limit, ask Claude for a handoff brief before it runs out, and save it.

Tips for developers

• Keep the latest version of the code, not every earlier attempt. The new AI needs the current state.
• Include exact errors, file paths and versions. They're the fastest way to get the new AI on track.
• State the stack once, for example "Python 3.12, FastAPI, Postgres", so the new AI doesn't guess.
• Ask it to confirm first. "Confirm the task and where we are before changing code" prevents a fresh rewrite of working code.
