Free AI limit hit while studying? How students keep going
It's late, you're halfway through revising, and the AI says you've reached your limit. On a free plan this happens to almost every student eventually. Here's how to keep going without losing your place, and how to make your free plans last longer.
Why free plans stop you
Free plans of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini give you a limited amount of use in a period of time. When you reach it, you have to wait for it to reset. There's also a separate problem: a single chat can grow too long for the AI to handle, and it gets slow or stops. Claude's help center explains the two kinds of limit, and ChatGPT users see a similar "conversation too long" message.
The frustrating part isn't the limit. It's that your progress is locked inside one chat: the topic you were revising, the explanations that finally made sense, the code you were fixing.
Keep studying right now
You usually have a free account on more than one AI. Carry your chat to the other one and continue from the same point.
- With mcosec.ai (free extension). Open the chat, click the mcosec.ai icon and press Read this chat. It keeps your questions, the latest answers and any code, shortens the filler, and opens ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini with the chat already in the message box. This works even after the limit, because it reads the page instead of asking the AI.
- Without an extension. Copy the important parts of the chat (your original question, the last few answers and any code) and paste them into the other AI with: "I'm continuing a study session from another assistant. Summarise where we are, then help me with: [your next question]."
Stuck on a long chat rather than a limit? The same trick works in the same AI: start a fresh chat with a compacted copy. See how to continue in a new chat.
Make free plans last longer
- One chat per topic. A new chat for each subject or question keeps chats short, which uses less of your limit and keeps answers faster.
- Don't paste whole PDFs or chapters. Paste the page or section you need. Long inputs use up limits quickly.
- Ask for short answers when you can. "Explain in 5 bullet points" uses less than "explain in detail".
- Move long chats early. When a chat starts to slow down, move it to a fresh one before it stops completely.
- Spread your work. Use different AIs for different subjects, so one limit doesn't stop everything.
Use AI to learn, not to skip learning
AI is great for explaining a concept a different way, quizzing you before an exam, or finding the bug in your code. It's not a replacement for doing the work. Many colleges have rules about using AI in assignments, so check yours, and when in doubt, ask your teacher.
A good habit: after an explanation, close the chat and try to explain the idea yourself, or ask the AI to quiz you on it.
Questions
What do I do when ChatGPT says I reached the free limit?
Wait for the limit to reset, or continue in another AI you have a free account on. mcosec.ai moves the chat for you so you keep your place; without it, paste the key parts of the chat into the other AI.
Is mcosec.ai free for students?
Yes. It is free for everyone, with no account, no student ID and no card.
Can I use AI for my assignments?
It depends on your college and the assignment. Check the rules, and use AI to understand topics rather than to hand in its answers as your own.
Does moving a chat use up my limit on the other AI?
Yes, a little: the moved chat counts as a message there. mcosec.ai compacts it first, so it uses less than pasting the whole conversation.
